Transitioning legacy business phone systems to NBN – are you ready?

As the National Broadband Network (NBN) continues to roll out across Australia, businesses will have to transfer their existing internet services to NBN providers. As part of the change, telephone systems will also need to be moved from copper (PSTN/ISDN) to a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) system. PSTN? VoIP? I just want to make phone calls

In the simplest terms, PSTN or ISDN lines are the telephone lines we grew up with. Those protocols are delivered via ‘hard-lines’ using copper wiring to a location and may allow multiple voice lines or fax lines to a single premise. They will soon be phased out in Australia.

VoIP refers to the transmission of voice and other data over the internet. That is, sending and receiving telephone calls over the internet. This might involve a desk phone just like before, but a completely different IT infrastructure for your business.
